{"id":912,"date":"2021-10-18T08:08:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-18T13:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.messysuitcase.com\/?p=912"},"modified":"2021-10-16T08:08:25","modified_gmt":"2021-10-16T13:08:25","slug":"san-juan-oil-spill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/messysuitcase.com\/index.php\/2021\/10\/18\/san-juan-oil-spill\/","title":{"rendered":"Full-Circle Moment in San Juan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The first time I set foot on the island of Puerto Rico was Jan. 6, 1994, when I moved there from Manhattan to become Caribbean Correspondent for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ap.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Associated Press.<\/a><\/strong> The AP flew me down and put me up in a beautiful hotel right on the ocean. When I arrived, I surveyed the pristine golden beach and the clear turquoise sea from my hotel room window, feeling so lucky to have landed in such a wonderful place. I stumbled to the window, opened the shades, and all I could see out to the horizon was black tar. No turquoise sea. No golden sand. Black water and a filthy beach. Miraculously, when I got to the end of the Condado area, right before the Dos Hermanos Bridge that crosses Condado Lagoon, a helicopter landed right in front of me and Puerto Rico <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pedro_Rossell%C3%B3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gov. Pedro J. Rossell\u00f3<\/a><\/strong> stepped out, there to survey the damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0I was able to interview him, and broke a huge story before my first day on the job. It turns out that during the night, the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20100513002903\/http:\/\/www.incidentnews.gov\/incident\/5034\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Morris J. Berman<\/strong><\/a>, a barge carrying 1.5 million gallons of oil, had drifted toward shore and collided with a coral reef, which ripped a hole in its hull and allowed 750,000 gallons of heavy black oil to spill into the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I learned later, after crossing telephone wires and finding myself talking to the officer in charge of the investigation, that the man who was at the helm of the barge that night drank too much and fell asleep at the wheel, which was why the barge was just drifting and was able to hit the reef.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/messysuitcase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Morris_J._Berman_oil_spill_Jan1994.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-961\" width=\"384\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/messysuitcase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Morris_J._Berman_oil_spill_Jan1994.jpg 384w, https:\/\/messysuitcase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Morris_J._Berman_oil_spill_Jan1994-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" \/><figcaption>By NOAA &#8211; https:\/\/photos.orr.noaa.gov\/gallery_4\/incidents-11.htm, Public Domain, https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=53401938<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The spill sullied 100 miles of shoreline and had a huge impact on the health of shore and sea birds, ocean life, vegetation, and of course tourism. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morris_J._Berman_oil_spill\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>You can read all about it here<\/strong>.<\/a> (Unfortunately, I can\u2019t find my original story online, as this was pre-Internet.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two days ago and 27 years later, I was walking through Condado, again on my first day in San Juan, and found some signs put up by the<strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/estuario.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"> San Juan Estuary Program<\/a><\/strong> that mentioned the grounding of the Berman and subsequent environmental impact. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"853\" src=\"https:\/\/messysuitcase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Estuario-Morris-Berman-1-1024x853.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-962\" srcset=\"https:\/\/messysuitcase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Estuario-Morris-Berman-1-1024x853.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/messysuitcase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Estuario-Morris-Berman-1-300x250.jpg 300w, https:\/\/messysuitcase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Estuario-Morris-Berman-1-768x640.jpg 768w, https:\/\/messysuitcase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Estuario-Morris-Berman-1-1536x1279.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/messysuitcase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Estuario-Morris-Berman-1-2048x1706.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This poster is very weathered but perhaps you can read it. It talks about the environmental impact, clean-up efforts, and promotes the maintenance of this region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This poster certainly brought back dramatic memories of that incident, which affected my life in many ways. It gave me the opportunity to come flying out of the gates as a foreign correspondent, breaking a huge story the morning after I arrived on the island. It shaped my reporting for the next year as the government focused on the investigation of the spill and clean-up challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twenty-seven years later, I&#8217;m back in San Juan, this time to live for two months. The beach is pristine and the ocean is glorious.
