{"id":3211,"date":"2025-10-24T14:08:56","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T20:08:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/messysuitcase.com\/?p=3211"},"modified":"2025-10-24T14:08:56","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T20:08:56","slug":"colombias-otherworldly-cathedral-of-salt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/messysuitcase.com\/index.php\/2025\/10\/24\/colombias-otherworldly-cathedral-of-salt\/","title":{"rendered":"Colombia\u2019s Otherworldly Cathedral of Salt"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\">We ventured 2 \u00bd hours south of Bogota to the Salt Cathedral, the \u201cFirst Wonder of Colombia.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;The Catedral de Sal de Zipaquir\u00e1 is an underground Roman Catholic&nbsp;Church built within the tunnels of a&nbsp;salt mine 660&nbsp;feet underground inside a&nbsp;&nbsp;mountain near the city of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zipaquir%C3%A1\">Zipaquir\u00e1<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colombia\">Colombia<\/a>. It\u2019s a huge tourist destination and a popular pilgrimage spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Colombia\u2019s Otherworldly Cathedral of Salt\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Xwtl5Qho9OM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This massive subterranean cathedral is truly spectacular, with dramatic lighting, sculptures, light shows, Gregorian Chants and choir music, a mining tour, an underground mall, and even a train. Following the Stations of the Cross is a fascinating experience.
