We loved living in Colorado<br \/>\nbecause of the many glorious riding routes we could choose from, ranging from bike<br \/>\ntrails into Denver to loops on mountain roads. We usually rode two or three times<br \/>\na week, including a long ride on the weekend. Lisa rocks a Specialized carbon<br \/>\nfiber road bike with about 27 gears, and Bob has a classic green Bianchi.<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nSo we optimistically brought our road bikes to Mexico on the<br \/>\nback of our car, hoping to continue our healthy habit and explore Mexico on two<br \/>\nwheels.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">\nTrying to Find a Safe Place to Ride<\/h3>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nI knew we were coming to a city of 5 million, people and despite<br \/>\nresearching online, I couldn\u2019t find any active road cycling clubs, or even<br \/>\ndecent rides, on our favorite cycling route app, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mapmyride.com\/us\/\">MapMyRide<\/a>. Nonetheless, every night<br \/>\nduring the drive to Mexico we dutifully took them off the car and took them<br \/>\ninto the hotel rooms, and now the bikes live in the guest room of our house in Tlaquepaque.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nBut they don\u2019t see the road much, and neither do we.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-HcYMA8O6reE\/XMYpugwfDlI\/AAAAAAAA5K8\/N2HhoTDVR6cY_8Fy1CYC6D8Ai-1fuloSgCEwYBhgL\/s1600\/IMG_20190428_105240712.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1200\" data-original-width=\"1600\" height=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-HcYMA8O6reE\/XMYpugwfDlI\/AAAAAAAA5K8\/N2HhoTDVR6cY_8Fy1CYC6D8Ai-1fuloSgCEwYBhgL\/s1600\/IMG_20190428_105240712.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nThe roads in Tlaquepaque are rough, narrow, virtually<br \/>\nunsigned, and often chaotic. We\u2019ve only driven the car four times in the four<br \/>\nmonths we\u2019ve been here because of the challenge of the roads. There are<br \/>\nvirtually no bike lanes in our section of Guadalajara. However, the city does<br \/>\nhave what is called \u201cVia RecreActiva\u201d on Sundays and holidays, where they shut<br \/>\ndown several major roads for recreational purposes for six hours. We\u2019ve come to<br \/>\naccept that as the best we can do.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">\nThank God for the Via RecreActiva<\/h3>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nSo every Sunday morning, we pull on our cycling clothes,<br \/>\npump up our tires, fill our water bottles, and hit the Via RecreActiva. To get<br \/>\nthere, we have to ride almost two miles on a busy street with no bike lanes, Avenida<br \/>\nRio Nilo.&nbsp;<span style=\"font-family: &quot;liberation serif&quot; , &quot;serif&quot;; font-size: 12.0pt;\">Bob<br \/>\nhas almost been \u201cdoored\u201d by cars several times, Lisa was almost run off the<br \/>\nroad by an aggressive bus driver, and almost rear-ended a cab that pulled in<br \/>\nright in front of her t collect a passenger. <\/span>But it is what it is. Rio<br \/>\nNilo gets us to the Via RecreActiva, and then we get to ride for one day a<br \/>\nweek.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nIf you can call it riding.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-gVBXoyimTVM\/XMYpwRVBr6I\/AAAAAAAA5LA\/i7e3BdBpGOQBQ8cAeN3U1CTttGDwZJfFQCEwYBhgL\/s1600\/IMG_20190428_105407969.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"900\" data-original-width=\"1600\" height=\"180\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-gVBXoyimTVM\/XMYpwRVBr6I\/AAAAAAAA5LA\/i7e3BdBpGOQBQ8cAeN3U1CTttGDwZJfFQCEwYBhgL\/s1600\/IMG_20190428_105407969.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nThere are essentially two main problems with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.viarecreactiva.org\/\"><b>Via RecreActiva<\/b><\/a>.<br \/>\nFirst, literally thousands of people take advantage of it \u2013unleashed dogs<br \/>\nchasing each other back and forth, kids learning to ride their bikes, teenagers<br \/>\ndoing tricks and popping wheelies, old ladies pulling carts crossing the street<br \/>\nat a mercado, boyfriends on bikes teaching their wobbly girlfriends how to skateboard,<br \/>\n<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp;<\/span>and people just walking three or four 4<br \/>\nabreast. It is just plain crowded and you have to be extremely vigilant to<br \/>\navoid running into someone. Lisa calls it \u201cObstacle Cycling.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-zgK0GI4C714\/XMYpvSsOw-I\/AAAAAAAA5K8\/1cT7wezWQXovqA31cNe4BLw3NvYR1eeGwCEwYBhgL\/s1600\/IMG_20190310_104037739.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1200\" data-original-width=\"1600\" height=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-zgK0GI4C714\/XMYpvSsOw-I\/AAAAAAAA5K8\/1cT7wezWQXovqA31cNe4BLw3NvYR1eeGwCEwYBhgL\/s1600\/IMG_20190310_104037739.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nThe other main problem is traffic on the cross streets. While<br \/>\nyour road is closed for a few hours, other roads aren\u2019t, so you have to stop at<br \/>\nmultiple lights and wait for traffic. This<br \/>\nmeans that you only get to ride several blocks before you are forced to stop so<br \/>\nthat cross traffic can go. <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nIt is better than nothing, but it is not for the faint of heart!<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">\nTrying to Find Other Riders<\/h3>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nWe have tried to make contact with other cyclists in Expat<br \/>\nforums here, but didn\u2019t get anything really solid from those groups. We have<br \/>\nalso seen cyclists riding on the sides of highways outside of the city, usually<br \/>\nfollowed by a sag wagon.
