Now that we\u2019re back in the United States for the summer, we\u2019re experiencing a bit of a culture shock! We\u2019re realizing there were a lot of things we missed about the US when we were living south of the border, and we\u2019re delighted to get to experience them again. <\/p>\n\n\n

<\/a><\/div>\n
But even more surprising \u2013 or perhaps not \u2013 is how many
things we miss about Mexico.<\/div>\n

Things We Missed About
the United States <\/b><\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
These are some of the things we missed about the U.S.
when we were living in Mexico:<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>English-language book stores (especially Barnes
& Noble)<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Noodles & Company<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Really good hamburgers<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Brick oven pizza<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Having white wine on restaurant menus<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Lilacs<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Yards and green grass<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Being able to put toilet paper in the toilet<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Being able to drink water from the faucet<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Being able to brush our teeth with water from the faucet<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Did we mention being able to drink water from the faucet?<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Cheezit crackers<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Toilet seats on public toilets<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Toilet paper always available in public toilets<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Being able to ride our road bikes<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
Things We Miss about Mexico<\/b><\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
Here are a few things we miss about Mexico, now that
we\u2019re back in the States:<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Low prices for everything<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Tlaquepaque, and the fact that there was always something free going on in Plaza Hidalgo<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n

Ballot Foclorico in Plaza Hidalgo, Tlaquepaque<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>The incredible views of Guanajuato below and the eye-popping, jagged mountains beyond from every window at Casa Estrella<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n
<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Guanajuato views<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>The fervent Roman Catholicism, including:<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Gorgeous churches, basilicas and cathedrals, even in the humblest villages<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Bloody Jesus statues and other curiosities inside churches<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Parades to accompany statues of Nuestra Senora (our mother Mary) from church to church<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Easter pageants, especially the bloody Jesuses carrying their crosses, accompanied by costumed throngs<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
\n\n\n\n\n
<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
The Virgin of Guadeloupe. She’s everywhere.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>The food! Especially:<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Nieve de garafa <\/i>(fresh, hand-stirred ice cream made inside metal barrels, with
unconventional flavors such as tequila, elote and blackberry cheesecake)<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Michoacan ice cream<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Cuarto de Kilo (awesome Guadalajara hamburger chain with crispy, lemon-pepper-dusted French fries)<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Pollo Pepe (great chicken place, also a chain)<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Gus\u2019s, our favorite the taco place in the basement of the mercado <\/i>(market) in
Tlaquepaque<\/div>\n
o<\/span>   <\/span>Mercado <\/i>fruits, veggies, breads, and fresh chicken and fish<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Valentina\u2019s, our favorite pizza place in Tlaquepaque, with its rooftop garden<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Cat-shaped bolillos (small loaves of bread) from Pasteleria Don Pedro<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Amazing donuts everywhere in Guadalajara (who knew Mexico was such a big donut destination?)<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Mexican street food, especially elote <\/i>(corn) and chayote<\/i> (a unique Mexican squash) with queso y crema<\/i> (cheese and a uniquely Mexican thick cream), then doused with salsa. The lonches <\/i>(meat sandwiches), tacos and fresh-made potato chips were also excellent.<\/div>\n

Elote in Tlaquepaque<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
o   <\/span><\/span>Pasteles <\/i>(cake) and <\/span>pan de elote<\/i> (corn bread) from La Petit Plaisir, the French bakery across the street from the Guadalajara Language Center<\/span><\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Chocomilk <\/i>in any restaurant, which is a refreshingly frothy, blended confection<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Cremax cookies <\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span>Raspadas <\/i>(shave ice with fresh fruit and syrup)<\/span><\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n

Raspada Frambuesa (raspberry)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

\u00b7       <\/span><\/span>The drinks! Especially:<\/span><\/p>\n

o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Horchata<\/i>s and horchata fresas<\/i> (a rice and cinnamon drink, sometimes accompanied by strawberries)<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Aguas frescas<\/i> (fresh water with the essence of fruit, including mandarin oranges and jamaica, <\/i>a therapeutic flower)<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Tequila <\/i>and mescal<\/i><\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Mexican craft beer<\/div>\n
o  <\/span> <\/i><\/span><\/span>Limonada <\/i>(lemonade)<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n

Horchata fresa <\/i>and tacos in the Tonala mercado<\/i><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Mariachi music<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Church bells<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Crowing roosters (who expected to miss this sound?)<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>The song played by the Zeta Gas truck (\u201cZeta, Zeta, Zeta Gas!\u201d)<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201cAgu-AA!\u201d yelled by the Pura water garafon (jug) delivery man<\/div>\n
o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>The daily jangling bell of the trashmen<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Atlas FC Futbol (soccer)<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Lucha Libre (wrestiling)<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Adorable roof dogs<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Waiters never rushing us and always waiting for us to ask for the check<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>The weather (warm days and cool nights, with the occasional dramatic downpour but not a speck of snow)<\/div>\n
\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Speaking Spanish all the time<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n
