It happened again recently. We were sitting in a rooftop bar in Montreal, sipping palomas and enjoying the view of the waterfront, when a woman at the table next to us leaned over and asked, \u201cSo where are you from?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cUhh…,\u201d I offered hesitantly.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
\u201cUmm…?\u201d Bob said questioningly.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
It\u2019s a difficult question right now, \u201cWhere are you from.\u201d How do we answer it?<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
We\u2019re from Mexico. At this moment. Sort of. Except where in Mexico? A few months in Guadalajara\/Tlaquepaque, a few in Guanajuato. Next up, Mexico City.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
But we\u2019re currently living in Ludlow, Vermont.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n

But …<\/h3>\n

But we\u2019re not \u201cfrom\u201d either of those places, because we just finished living for a decade in Colorado.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

But we\u2019re not \u201cfrom\u201d Colorado, either, because before we moved west, we lived for about 20 years in New York.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
But we\u2019re not really \u201cfrom\u201d New York, either, because we were both born in Pennsylvania (Bob in Mechanicsburg, outside Harrisburg, and Lisa in Williamsport, the home of Little League Baseball). And we both lived in a ton of different places before meeting in New York.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
In Mexico, when they ask, \u201cDe donde es?\u201d (\u201cWhere are you from?), they are asking, \u201cWhere you were born?\u201d We can say \u201cSomos de Estados Unidos\u201d or \u201cSomos de Pennsylvania\u201d (We’re from the United States, or We’re from Pennsylvania.)<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
But to everyone else? Lately I\u2019ve been saying, \u201cWe split our year between summers in Vermont and the rest of the year exploring Mexico.\u201d<\/div>\n

Ask the Kids<\/h3>\n
We asked the kids how they would answer the question, \u201cWhere are you from?\u201d<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
\u201cEasy,\u201d Gavin said. \u201cI just tell them I\u2019m from Colorado. They want to know where I came here from before college. That\u2019s Colorado.\u201d<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
\u201cColorado,\u201d agreed Aryk. \u201cExcept that I was born in New York. And I live in England. But I just say Colorado.\u201d<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
And that\u2019s where we\u2019re from. Right now. What would YOU say?<\/div>\n
